Signs of American Life
This work deals with a curiosity about language. In contemporary society, we communicate with and in images: news media, adverting, photographs. There is a universal grammar and language of seeing of creating images. I am interested in how we create this meaning, and how we decide what images are worth looking at. In the days before social media and digital cameras, snapshots were created for a personal audience. They weren’t usually seen outside of the photographer’s home, and more often than not, they were stored away in a closet soon after being developed. I am interested in the nuance in daily human life and how we communicate our, joys, fears, sorrows and accomplishments. In my recent work, Signs of American life I take these signs and symbols and reinterpret them, which both sheds and creates meaning.
